Attic Access Hatches and Doors
Attic access hatches and doors are major sources of air leakage. Because warm air rises in a home in winter (known as the “stack effect”), it pushes against the ceiling of the home and escapes through any holes, seams or gaps. Even tiny gaps cause substantial heat loss because they are leaking 24/7.
A ceiling without penetrations or openings is the simplest and easiest approach to preventing leaks. But, this may not be an option, especially in retrofits. Fortunately, airtight, insulated attic access hatches and doors prevent warm air leakage whenever you must have access to the attic.
